William Joseph (Bill) Ward was the second child of Michael Edward Ward and Annie Frances Sallaway born 15 July 1896 at Whitewood.
Marriage and children
Bill married Florence May (Flo) Healey in 1926. They had two children:
- William Michael, born 23 May 1927
- June Patricia, 14 June 1929
Life and times
Bill's father, Michael Edward Ward, moved the family to Katoomba about 1903 where Bill attended school. He was an altar boy at Lithgow and at one time drove the Bishop around the district in a sulky.
His father purchased a property at Yoval called Timbee. Bill and his brother Harry helped run this property. While at Yoval Bill met Florence Healey who lived there. She later moved to Sydney and married Bill in 1926. Bill had trotters which he trained and raced in Sydney over the next few years.
As the depression hit, Bill's father sold Timbee and moved the entire family to Bogan Gate where Bill and Floe had a Paper/Barber Shop and a Billiard Saloon. As the depression hit harder they all sold their interests at Bogan Gate and moved to their uncle Patrick (Paddy) Ward’s property at Orange Birrillee where Bill ran a dairy and grew potatoes for market and the children went to school there.
Bill and Flo moved back to Greencamp to help Thomas as he was getting on in years. Bill became manager and moved into Nyngan to live in 1937. Greencamp was sold after Thomas died in 1960 and Bill purchased Woodburn, a property between Miandetta and Hermidale, but later had to sell it because of ill health.
Bill was a keen member of the Nyngan PA&H Association (Show Society) for a number of years and was President from 1957 to 1960 and was also president of the St Patricks Race Club. Flo was a member of the CWA for years. Her big love was golf which she played quiet well.
Bill died 6 March 1973. Flo Died 10 November 1983. Both were buried in the Nyngan Catholic Cemetery.
