Birth place

Jessica Louise (Jessie) Ward was the youngest child of Michael Edward Ward and Annie Frances Sallaway and was born at Nyngan on 30 July 1914.

Marriage and children

Jessie married John Patrick Walsh on 21 January 1935 at St Patrick’s Church Manly, and settled on the family dairy farm, Glengarrif at Jaspers Brush, near Berry.

They had five children:

  • Noelene Frances, born 15 October 1935
  • Michael Patrick, 10 January 1937
  • Ann Patricia, 21 April 1942
  • John Anthony, 8 August 1947
  • Gabriel Therese, 24 July 1949

Life and times

Jessie spent her early years in Nyngan and completed her education at Mount Saint Mary’s College, Katoomba, and later commenced her nursing training at Prince Henry Hospital Sydney. As part of this training, she was sent to the David Berry Hospital at Berry, where she met her future husband, John Patrick Walsh, the only son of Patrick and Annie Walsh (nee Caffery), both descendants of early pioneers of the Shoalhaven area.

The children were all educated at Berry, Nowra and then Sydney. Noelene did her teacher training at Wagga Wagga Teacher’s College and still teaches on a casual basis in the Wollongong area. Ann Patricia did her general nursing training at Balmain, followed by a midwifery course at the Mater Hospital, North Sydney. Pat still does casual nursing at a nursing home in Sydney.

Jessie devoted her time to raising the family, and helping her husband on the farm, especially during the war years. During this time she was an active member of the Red Cross. Both Jessie and Jack enjoyed socializing with friends at country balls and playing cards. John was a rugby league footballer with the Berry team, and Jessie supported him in this sport.

In 1926, due to John’s ill health, they retired from the farm. Jessie and John then enjoyed playing bowls. A highlight of these years was when she was a member of the winning Bomaderry No 1 Pennant Team in 1977. However, she was never happier than when she had her family around her, especially her grandchildren.

After John’s death in 1986, Jessie moved to her unit at the Mayflower Retirement Village in Gerringong. Here she enjoyed visits from old friends, and was regularly visited by her family.

Jessie died on 13 September 1990 in Kiama, with her family around her.
