Birth place

Nora Gertrude (Norse) Ward was the sixth child born to Michael Ward and Annie Frances Sallaway at Nyngan in 1906.

Marriage and children

Norse married George Payne later in life and they had no children.

Life and times

Norse had a hair dressing shop in Pangee Street, Nyngan near where Murphy’s Hardware is at present.

Norse married George Payne who had a drapery and clothing shop known as "Payne’s Store" in the Nyngan main street, originally in Nymagee Street, near where Barretts Hotel was.

In an interview with Fred Fitzalan, who worked at Payne’s Store for 28 years, he mentioned that Norse did all the buying for the womens' section and had an uncanny knowledge of what different people liked and would order items on speculation for that person, and nearly always they would buy it.

Norse and George lived above the shop with Norse's sister Annie Frances (Nance) cooking and housekeeping for them.

George Payne died on 2 September 1956 at the age of 51 years.

Norse carried on with the shop until the early 1970s when she decided the margin was too small in clothing to make a profit and closed the shop. She reopened for a few months and then closed permanently.

Norse then moved to a little flat in Cobar Street and lived on her own, as Nance had died in 1971.

Norse played a good game of golf and was partnered by Fred Fitzalan. Her two loves were golf and horses She rode successfully in many of the Nyngan Shows.

Her brothers Bill and Harry and their wives visited her regularly to keep in touch.

Norse died on 7 February 1987 at the age of 80 years and is buried in the Nyngan Lawn Cemetery.
